Change of Status F1 to H1B stamping & all different visa category info in Mexico – Info by https://usvisastampinginmexico.com/
This page has info about change of status F1 to H1B stamping & many other different change of status of different visa category stamping in mexico.
NOTE : As per Jan 30th 2023 : Please avoid Mexico city for Change of Visa Category stamping (F1 to H1B), We heard 2 instances in Jan 2023 & Dec 2022 from our clients that after finishing ASC appointment, at Consulate, consulate staff said they are not allowing change of visa category stamping at Mexico city for 3rd country nationals., They were able to come back to USA using automatic revalidation rule (with expired US visa & valid i-797A or i-20, you can come back to USA within 30 days (even if your visa appointment got cancelled or unable to attend)
No other consulate in mexico has this issue as of Jan 30th 2023
Until 2019 … Including us, many other websites that you can find in google search are under impression that change of status / change of visa category stamping is not possible in Mexico,
But based on recent updates from our clients in 2022 / 2021 & 2020 who attended change of status – change of visa category stamping & got successful stamping – we want to provide information that understanding is wrong /totally a myth
This is common question everyone has : Is really Change of Status F1 to H1B stamping (or) Any change of status stamping(F1 to H1B, B1 to J1, J1 to H1B, J1 to O1, H1B to O1, F1 to O1, H1B to O1, H4 to F1, L1 to F1, L2 to F1) is possible in Mexico ?
Simple answer is “YES” (Yes at All locations except at Mexico city by non-emergency appointments); Can attend change of visa category stamping by Emergency appointments.
Below is what official US consulates in Mexico website says about visa stamping for “Third country nationals – living in USA” – Please check 3rd point.
Based on that 3rd point, we have been guiding many members from last 3 years that change of status / change of visa category(F1 to H1B, L1 to H1B, L1 to F1 etc.,) stamping is not possible in Mexico, we used to direct all folks to try their change of status stamping in either canada or home country.
But recently in 2022 & 2021 – during pandemic, we found a lot of our clients(F1, H1B, F1 to H1B, J2 to H1B, F1 to O1A, H1B to O1, H4 to F1, L2 to F1) who travelled from USA to Mexico for change of status / Change of visa category stamping & got stamped without any issues through emergency appointments.

****** INFORMATION GATHERED FOR F1 to H1B STAMPING MEMBERS ******
During 2018, one of our client attended for F1 to H1B stamping in matamoros, mexico and got approved without any issues, At that time – we are still under impression that change of visa category stamping is not allowed in mexico. In his case he followed what his attorney from Murthy Law firm said to him that he is good to attend in mexico. He attended visa interview & got his visa approved without any issues, we thought he just got lucky.
But after gathering from recent updates from few other folks who did F1 to H1B stamping & other visa category stampings, we came to conclusion that change of status stamping is possible in mexico.
Change of Status F1 to H1B stamping seems possible based on this visa interview as well you can see many below updates about other change of visa category folks for stamped in mexico locations.

Your name: Narsimha
Appointment location: Monterrey
Appointment dates: Dec 1,2
Current visa stamped in passport category ? H4
Previous visa in passport ? B1/B2
Wife on H1 and she never went out of the country since she moved to US (About 5 years). I walked in alone for H4 extension, based on my spouse H1 approval (extension)
Questions asked during interview:
– A lot of questions were clarifications as the Consulate Officerwanted to get the case right
“What is the latest status of your spouse Visa?”
“How often do you visit the US before you convert to H4 from B1/B2”
“What is your spouse’s latest stamped date?”
“How did you meet your spouse”
“Are you applying for a fresh H4 or renewal” – Mine was renewed after COS. So took a while for Consulate Officerto comprehend
“what time is your flight tomorrow”
I am typing only the questions that are on top of my head. But we had a good 20 – 30 minutes conversation.
If the Consulate Officer is asking a lot of questions, it is only to make sure that they do not find a reason to reject your case. So be patient, stay cool and explain as patiently as you can. Most importantly DONT FAKE anything. I had a lot of questions, but the tone and intent was positive. The Consulate Officer at some point told me she is not finding a way to enter my case dates and approve, so she has to get someone to help her and finally told me she approved my case.
Documents asked during visa interview: I-797 (mine and spouse), copy of last visa of spouse, marriage certificate
Who got stamped in Mexico recently in 2020 & 2021 ?
In year 2020, Due to the pandemic & many consulates got closed all over the world, we think that really opened the door for possibility / members to try for change of status / change of visa category stamping in mexico using emergency appointments.
Many of our clients who needs to change from F1 to H1B, F1 to O1, J1 to H1B, H1B to O1, H4 to H1B, H1B to H4, L1 to F1, L2 to F1, H4 to F1, F2 to F1, Few clients got stamped from F1 to H1B as well attended in Mexico, Monterrey, Mexico City, Nogales, Nuevo laredo & Tijuana locations so far in 2020 & 2021
That really bust the myth(proves wrong) that Mexico don’t allow change of visa category stamping.

We would say try to attend at same locations where others attended and got successful stamping – Monterrey, Mexico City, Nogales, Nuevo Laredo, Tijuana & Ciudad Juarez locations so far is in the list where our clients got successful stamping.
Did visa officers ask any questions during visa interviews about why mexico & why change of visa status stamping in Mexico ?
We usually gather visa interviews questions, profile of our clients, their previous visa category, current visa category they are getting stamped as that info helps others – Few were asked about why mexico – Answers can be as simple as due to lack of visa appointments in home country, due to critical project timelines – unable to travel to home country, availability of much better visa dates in mexico. so far … none of those questions resulted in any denials so far in mexico in 2019 & 2020.
Most common FAQ’s
Did you see any Denials of visas in Mexico ? What to do incase of any Denials ?
Visa denials are very very rare in mexico…
We have seen around 3 or 4 out of 6000+ of our clients so far in Mexico among all different visa holders so far from last 3 years, they don’t simply reject your visa for no reason.
As far as your profile and your employer profile(not being blacklisted etc.,) is good, you can attend without any issues
If you are specifically worried about denial, message us separately your situation, so we can review your details and guide you what’s best thing to do : contact us in WhatsApp by clicking this link : https://wa.me/19013084647
We had clients who got approved even who had DUI(Driving under influence), its just you need to stay around 7 to 10 days in Mexico, until you complete lab tests (In India, this process takes few weeks to few months time as far as I heard)
So far none of change of visa category stamping folks got denied.
Incase of worst case scenario – if visa gets denied, which is very very rare incident, you need to plan to fly to India from Mexico to attend visa interview again. we will guide you & help you with that.
Even if you attend in canada or home country, you have same risk, you can take calculated risk based on recent updates / recent trend of stamping in mexico.
How about 221’gs (Administrative processing) ? / How much time it takes to clear 221g in Mexico ?
About 221g (Administrative processing) in Mexico : It usually takes 1 to 7 days to clear 221g in most cases as per 2019 and 2020. 221g clearance timelines are a lot better in Mexico than India(India takes even months).
Incase if you need to stay for few more days due to 221g, our team can help you with accommodation & transportation.
Its based on different 221g’s too…Sevis check, Pims check, etc.,
Recently 1 to 2 of our clients who attended for emergency appointment got 221g to check whether they fall under presidential proclamation or not (takes average of 1 to 5 business days)
In few locations in Mexico, in 2019, few members were able to come back through border poe locations using I-797A while 221g is pending and went back to get passport stamped once 221g got resolved
Don’t know if that’s still possible as we have not encountered anyone trying that on 2020 due to lack of non-emergency appointments since March 2020.
