I am a student, How do i re-activate my Sevis ?
There are two options to regain active status.
- Travel Out of the country Option. Depart the U.S.(Fly by Air or Cross by Land) and re-enter with a new initial I-20 from the school where you lost status or from a new school authorized to issue I-20’s. (You can do this at Mexico or Canada Borders, To do it at canada borders, you might need canadian visa / To do it at mexico borders, you don’t need any mexican visa). You can do this whether you have your current F1 visa expired or valid.
- Reinstatement Option. Please contact your ISSS advisor to discuss eligibility for reinstatement.
I am on H1B, H4, E3, E3D, L1A, L1B, L2, J1, J2, B1, B2, K, O1, O3 visa. How do i get new i-94 / renewal after getting my passport renewal done ?

Hello, I’m graduate student from TAMUC, for some reason my records had been completed which led to sevis deactivation.
After few month I took admission in a new college and they advised me to make my travel re-arrangements outside of the country in order to activate my sevis.
Instead of long India trip just for simple sevis activation, i just been to US Mexico Border location.
I carried all my documents I.e my previous i20 , new i20, passport,visa, i94, and financial documents.
We reached the border of United States in Laredo Texas,
Parked car at at Laredo, Texas border which is border city of Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, crossed border & came back , got my sevis reactivated within 1 hour totally.
Venkat & team guided with all information needed including pictures.
Just go through that International bridge, at mid-point you will turn back at Laredo Texas border.
If you go until end of bridge, you might come across Mexican security team, where your luggage will be scanned.
and you can cross road to other side & turn back and walk through other bridge /lane where you can find folks entering into USA.
you just have to go through a small inspection in order to re-enter the country in some cases.
Just beside the border(before entering into US,) there is i94 office where the sevis and i94 is updated. I gave my passport to the officer and when my turn came they just asked my i-20. They asked me why I’m taking my second masters. I gave them the reason that I did not get a degree from my first masters so I applied for a second one.
Then they asked which university I was going to and that’s it they activated my sevis and told me that I’m good to go. The whole process just took 5 mins at CBP office to activate my Sevis.
How to travel to Nuevo Laredo(Mexico) – Laredo(Texas) Border ?
You can fly to Laredo airport (LRD), Take Uber to international bridge 1, Inform your Uber drive that you need to go to International bridge, takes 15-20 mins to reach the bridge. Get down at the International bridge and input 1$ worth of quarters per person in Turn Style for you to enter the international bridge & cross and come back to USA.
Is it possible to finish everything in same day ?
Yes, You can plan to arrive at morning & can take afternoon or evening flight. (Keep gap of 4 to 5 hours for total process from airport landing until you go back to airport for catching return flight).
Once you arrive to the bridge, your cross it and come back to I-94 office (This process takes 10-15 mins). time it takes to activate sevis or giving your I-94 (for H1B or other visa category folks etc.,) might depends on POE officers (varies from 5 mins to an hour if they ask you to sit and wait)

They are open 24 hours – 365 days ; but recommended timings to cross border is at day time.
